Voters Service Views - FireworksThe fireworks controversy is now going into its second year. At the Tuesday February 5 meeting of the Mayor and the Board of Supervisors, two bills that would tighten existing controls were passed on first reading. One bill would ban all private use of fireworks. A measure introduced by Supervisor Herman G. P. Lemke allows the use of fireworks only in religious ceremonials and public displays. The second bill, introduced by Supervisor Clessen Y. Chikasuye, makes it illegal for a parent to allow his children to buy or use fireworks. It does, however, allow adults to set off fireworks on New Year's, Chinese New Year's and the Fourth of July. Mr. Chikasuye says that his proposal would cut down accidents to children while allowing the traditional use of fireworks here. Both bills were sent to the Committee of the Whole for consideration.
