Charter Commission

Mayor George Christopher of San Francisco was a visitor at the Charter Commission in October. Prior to his election as mayor, he had been a member of the Board of Supervisors for 10 years, and so had had experience in the city government from both the legislative and the administrative angle. He said that the following factors contribute largely to successful administration of the city:

  1. San Francisco has a strong mayor-council type of government.

  2. The mayor has an administrative assistant with important responsibilities.

  3. Supervisors are elected at large and on a non-partisan ticket.

  4. The mayor has practically complete control of the budget.

  5. All governmental sessions are open to the public.

Other meetings of the Charter Commission were devoted to the financial structure of government.
