Voter Service Views - Fireworks Public Hearing

At a two-hour public hearing, City Supervisors listened to Honoluluans battle for and against Bill No. 20. Twenty-two persons were in favor of more rigid controls and nine speakers urged passage of the ordinance now under consideration.

One week after the public hearing, Tuesday, May 1st, Supervisors directed City Attorney, Norman K. Chung to draw up two amendments'

  1. Allows those wishing to buy fireworks for religious or ceremonial purposes to make application direct to the dealers.

  2. Forbids sale of fireworks after 9:00 P, M. on New Year's Eve, Chinese New Year's, and Fourth of July.

Supervisor Samuel K. Apoliona tried to persuade the Supervisors to accept his fireworks bill but he was turned down.
