Calendar Freedom of the Press Voters Service Views Voters Service Legislative News Question Box Report on the Charter Budget Report - June 30, 1955 |
Legislative NewsThe League has a perfect score on the two action items for which it worked in the 1955 Legislature: both the Charter Commission and the Jail bond issue passed. But we cannot just sit back and congratulate ourselves; further effort is needed in both areas. The Jail is in the able hands of the Community Committee for a New Jail which was an effective lobbying agent under the direction of Chairman William Mottz. A $700,000 bond issue was approved for insertion in the capital improvements bill during the last day of the session. It may take up to eighteen months before the bonds for this project are issued and sold, but we are proud of our part in getting the community to see the need for a new jail for Honolulu. The Community Committee has appointed a Site Committee to look at prospective sites and to make recommendations. Hate Kortschak, Chairman of the Local Resources Committee which began a study of the Jail over two years ago, has been appointed to serve on the Site Committee.
