Voters Service ViewsWhile we are catching our breath and waiting to hear what will happen in the Custer Case brought by Mayor Blaisdell against three department heads of our City-County Government, may we point out several bills now before the 1955 Legislature, caving to do with City-County affairs: House Bill 47 would take the Steiner property out of the Master Plan for Beach Extension and give it to a private concern for a proposed 18-story hotel site. This is the same property that was kept in the Master Plan after a fight in the last Board of Supervisors. Other interesting bills to watch are HB 4, SB 6, both having to do with the real property tax. HB 27, SB 30 would give appointive power to the City-County over the Police Commission. HB 29 brings the Liquor Commission under the counties. SB 242 would increase the Board of Supervisors to 11 and provide for representation from rural areas. Two controversial proposals are now before the Board of Supervisors in the form of Resolutions proposed by the Planning Commission. Resolution No. 634 would amend the Master Plan, realign Kalakaua Avenue and establish an open beach area. Resolution No. 638 could amend portions of the Master Plan by establishing off-street parking. These resolutions came up Tuesday, February 24 but were deferred on motion of Supervisor Apoliona. Tuesday, March 1 a public hearing was held on these resolutions. Nine residents of the areas affected verbally and 36 in writing objected to the resolutions, calling them 'unfair, unjust and undemocratic." The Supervisors took the "Matter under advisement" and will vote on the resolutions later. Voters service Committee will keep you informed.
