Rail and Ann Kobayashi's ElectionNow that Ann Kobayashi has returned to the City Council, we can expect increased scrutiny of the planned rail transit system. On election night, Ms. Kobayashi said that, while respecting the voters’ choice of steel-on-steel transit, light rail is still a possibility. Honolulu League has joined with the Oahu Coalition for Affordable & Flexible Transit which advocates for street-level transit, which is light rail, while the mayor’s plan for all-elevated trains is heavy rail. Light rail is less bulky and intrusive and less expensive. Ms. Kobayashi also said she will look into the “transparency of the transit funds—look at how the money has been spent and why”.
