Mikulina Accepts Monson Award... and Plays it ForwardThe first annual Astrid & Donald Monson Community Award Reception, hosted by the League of Women Voters of Honolulu on November 13 at the Honolulu Elks Club, was enjoyed by close to 75 guests. A spectacular sunset off the back lanai, paired with great music performed by Soul Treatment (Jeff Mikulina on the drums), ono pupu and drinks set the tone for paying tribute to late Astrid Monson. A personal remembrance was delivered by Helen Griffin. Sue Miller, Vice President of Honolulu League, told us of Astrid's many professional achievements and her legacy of gifts to nonprofit organizations.
The highlight of the evening was awarding the first annual Astrid & Donald Monson Community Award to Jeff Mikulina, "...an organization or individual who made the year's outstanding contribution toward or involving public interest planning, housing, or environmental issues". The former Executive Director of the Sierra Club, Mikulina is now the Executive Director for Blue Planet Foundations, an organization that is committed to change the world's energy culture. But the highlight was Mikulina's demonstration of playing it forward and donating back all of the award money to five nonprofits of which $1,000 went to The League of Women Voters of Honolulu.
