League Honors Jeff MikulinaSAVE THIS DATE! On November 13, the Honolulu LWV Education Fund will present the First Annual Donald & Astrid Monson Award to Jeff Mikulina, Director of the Sierra Club of Hawaii. The presentation will be made at the Elks Club in Waikiki at a celebration, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Astrid Monson and her husband Donald moved to Hawaii in 1973 to retire after global careers as planners. But she never slowed down, instead assuming the chairmanship of Honolulu League's Planning & Zoning committee. In her volunteer work for the League and other groups, she commuted by bus from her Kailua home to testify frequently on issues. Astrid Monson's will establishes an "annual award of $5,000 to an organization or individual ... (who has) made the year's outstanding contribution toward or involving public interest planning, housing, or environmental issues." The Honolulu LWV will sponsor the celebration to honor Astrid Mon-son's life and legacy and, in keeping with her wishes, recognize an individual who has contributed to the betterment of Hawaii and its people, as epitomized by Mr. Mikulina. Tickets to the celebration are $50 and include heavy pupus, one cocktail, music provided by the band Soul Treatment, and complimentary parking. We encourage our members and friends and family to join the Honolulu LWV in our inaugural celebration of the Annual Monson Award.
