Astrid Monson
1913-2006
Astrid Monson and her husband moved to Hawaii 33 years ago - ostensibly to retire - but she joined the League in 1974, and there went the retirement.
As chair of the planning and zoning committee, Astrid used her considerable knowledge and expertise in boosting the creation of the second city in Ewa; pushing for controls on urban sprawl across the island; working on the charter revision of the development plan process and growth limits in Central, Windward Oahu and the North Shore; opposing the city's rail transit project as well as opposing increasing height limits on buildings in Waikiki and downtown; and found time to write newspaper columns on planning issues in both papers from 1981 through the mid 1990's.
The Monsons left no survivors.
